DIY in North York. The simplest way of testing a light switch

If flipping a switch does not turn the light(s) on as usual, here is how you can figure out if the switch is to blame.

First, simplest, and obvious thing to do is to change the light bulbs.

Second, reset circuit breakers and/or check and replace blown fuses, if any.

Third, test the switch itself. Prepare a piece of testing wire one foot long or so and strip 1/8" of insulation from both ends.

Remove cover plate and pull the switch out from the box. You now can bypass the switch by touching bare ends of the testing wire to its two screws. If the light turns on, then the switch is defective and should be replaced.

Similarly, if it's a three way switch, bypass the switch by touching bare ends of the testing wire to its three screws like this: first to second, first to third, and second to third. Repeat this with another three way switch. If the light turns on, then that 3 way switch is defective and should be replaced.

If nothing happens then the fault is somewhere else. Keep reading.
